What a great article about networking! Here a few additional thoughts.
It's true - networking is about creating relationships, but more importantly its about establishing a lasting impression on another person. The impression you leave should inspire the other one to genuinely WANT to help you. In my networking efforts, I meet new people quite often. However, only a few of them make enough of an impression that I feel the need to "go the extra mile" to help them in some way.
Networking IS also about giving, rather than receiving. It's very true that the more generously you give, the more you will receive. That's one of the ways I've found that leaves a lasting impression .... the giving. If you give someone something without expecting something in return, even something as simple as a positive thought or encouraging word, you've left an impression.
